Hypokalemia-
Definition-
It is a condition of electrolyte imbalance in which potassium in concentration in blood is lower than normal range.
Normal range - 3.5 to 4.5 mEq/L
Causes-
* Vomiting
* renal disorder
* Self induced vomiting
* alcohol abuse
* poor dietary intake of potassium
* Drug ( diuretics , laxative , cisplatin , levodopa )
* Diarrhoea
* cushing syndrome
* very low calorie diet
Sign and Symptoms-
* myalgia ( muscle pain )
* muscle cramps
* muscle weakness
* respiratory depression
* Impaired of skeletal muscle function
* elevation of blood pressure
Treatment-
* Treat underlying cause Ex. diarrhoea , vomiting , stopping medication
* Potassium containing food should be recommended Ex. green vegetables ,tomatoes , coconut water , citrus fruits , bananas , In severe hypokalaemia need I.V fluids.
