Definition=
Ear irrigation is the washing of the external auditory canal with a stream of liquid called ear irrigation.

Purpose =
* To remove the ear wax & foreign body
* To cleanse the ear in case of purulent discharge caused by the middle ear infection
* For antiseptic effect
* To apply heat
* To evaluate vestibular function

* A sterile container
* Sterile solution
* Irrigation syringe , bulb syringe
* kidney trey
* sterile gauze
* cotton applicator
* Towel
* Transfer forceps
* Ear medication
* Spot light

Procedure =

* Asses client level of comfort and use otoscope to check condition of tympanic membrane.

* Check physician order for type of irrigation solution to order.

* prepare the client

* Wash hands

* Assets client to lying or sitting position with head tilted towards affected ear
( client may help to hold basin )

* Place towel over shoulder just under ear & kidney Trey

* Inspect ear canal for accumulation of cerumen or debris. Remove with cotton applicator

* Check irrigation solution Temperature and temperature should be 37°c or 38°c

* Straighten auditory canal for introduction of solution.
In infant, Pull auricle or pinna down & back.
In adult, Pull auricle or pinna up & back.

* With the tip of syringe first above canal opening irrigation gantly by creating steady flow of solution against roof of auditory canal.
If syringe are used for ear irrigation, the size of the syringe should be convenient to operator

* Continue irrigation until all debris has been removed or all solution has been used

* Asses client for dizziness, nausea if seen stop procedure

* Dry off external ear & apply cotton ball to auditory meatus

* Position client on side of affected ear for 10 min.

* Remove equipment & wash hand

* Return to client to evaluate character & amount of drainage & determine client level of comfort

* Record response to irrigation & note type, temperature & volume of solution used & character of the drainage

* Return to client after 10 min.
To remove cotton ball & evaluate drainage client may return to normal level of activity.
